Qualitative Data Deliverables Summary

This document summarizes the outputs, deliverables and next steps of the qualitative data subgroup. Summary of deliverables:

  1. Concrete, usable implementation of the proposed changes to the DDI-CDI to accommodate qualitative data annotations, to be reviewed by CDI-modelers:  20251114 - Proposed amendments to DDI-CDI v1 - Quali

  2. Tested use cases from different domains (following Implementation Use Case template)

    1. Implementation Use Case - Edwardians collection

    2. Implementation Use Case -  Archived video data

    3. Implementation Use Case - Cauliflower

  3. Alignment with existing standards and specifications: 

    1. W3C Web Annotation Data Model referenced with the help of attributes at the InstanceValue level

    2. Croissant (Format and RAI Specifications), and RO-Crates: e.g. the storage or packaging of the qualitative data objects remains open issue

 

Topic Overview

This group is convened to continue the work of the Qualitative Data Working Group, with an emphasis (but not exclusive focus) on turning the proposed changes to the DDI-CDI to accommodate qualitative data annotations into a concrete, usable implementation. Major outputs will be a realization of that model and a number of documented test cases, to make sure that it provides a useful encoding of needed metadata for qualitative data and mixed collections, suitable for use across domains. Examples for social science, life sciences, and hard sciences should be covered, and the work should be guided by and aligned with existing standards and specifications (e.g. the Web Annotation Data Model from the W3C, the Croissant Format Specification, and RO-Crates). Other outputs may be identified by the group in line with the goals of the working group.
