User consultation on topics for inclusion in DDI 4 release 3 (due September 2015)

We are seeking feedback from the community on topics proposed for inclusion in release 3 of DDI 4, due for public comment in September 2015. We invite you to provide use cases that you would like to see supported or additional topics for inclusion.

Throughout 2014 multiple teams worked to deliver the core components of DDI 4. The following topics have been modelled and are included in the first and second releases due out for public comment in March and June this year:

Agent
Core
Identification
Primitives
Conceptual
Core Process
Discovery

Classification
Simple Instrument
Simple Data Description
Data Capture
Representations
Process

See http://lion.ddialliance.org/ for the current status of the model.

Development is about to commence on release 3 of DDI 4 due for release in September 2015.

Topics proposed for inclusion in release 3:

Complex Data Description

This will build on the Simple Data Description model, supplementing it to describe aspects of more complex data file types. e.g. Multiple Data Sources, Stacked Datasets, Multi-dimensional Tables or Stores.

Enhanced Citation

This will incorporate new items to describe types of research-related contributor roles and levels of contribution. It will also extend the possibility for attribution to any versionable object in DDI, enabling the citation of non-traditional objects related to research, including datasets, instruments, variables, etc. This will also introduce the notion of different description types: attribution (citation), sourcing, and characterization.

Complex Instrument

This will build on the Simple Instrument, adding new functionality to cover methods of data capture beyond simple surveys.

Simple Codebook

This packages together the basic contents of a data dictionary (Simple Data Description) with high level information on the data (discovery, coverage, simple instrument, and data relationships).

Methodology

This will describe the study design specifications underlying the conduct of a research/business project. This is distinct from the execution of the design – which is captured elsewhere (in Data Collection, Fieldwork, Data Processing and Data Analysis) – but should be able to be related to the execution in the conduct of the study. There are a variety of possible areas to cover such as study inception, data management planning, survey development, sampling, weighting, estimation, imputation, etc.

We are seeking comment on the proposed inclusions for release 3. Please consider:

  • Are there specific use cases important to your institution and the broader community that can help model the proposed topics?
  • Are there additional topics that your institution and the broader community consider to be a priority for inclusion in release 3?

Please provide any comments by 20th February to adam.brown@stats.govt.nz. The DDI Advisory Group will consider the feedback, balance priorities with available resources and publish an updated list of inclusions for release 3 by early March.

Please get in touch if you have any questions or comments or would like to get involved in the development of DDI 4.
