Feedback : "Statistical Agencies Using DDI Metadata Standards: Promoting Transparency and Reusability of Data" on April, 14 2023

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1mSLpsgIRF8Dxg9AZ2QEj20JK07WNBksc/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=101356918831263873668&rtpof=true&sd=true

  • Key points:

    • Could do better: A lot of the information was over my head.  There were process flowcharts depicted that weren't explained/walked through and I was confused.  Portion I understood the best was Dan Gillman, U.S. Bureau of  Labor Statistics

    • Could do better: More practical focus

    • Requested topics: (bring to developers group?)

      • DDI implementation in practice

      • How to choose elements properly in DDI in order to build consolidated XML files

      • The use of DDI within an end-to-end statistical production process as a metadata-driven process

      • Software to support the DDI processes

      • Interesting to learn about practical implementations, perhaps in the form of discussions for more technical audiences

      • Further information re: development of standardized tools and dictionaries

    • Need info on where to find DDI formative courses

  • How to build on momentum?

  • Combine training with tool development

  • Can mention Colectica, but also need to be able to present alternatives, esp. Open source

Getting Started page subgroup

  • First interview done, learned a lot

  • Second interview TK

List of trainers:

International Data week

  • Proposal deadline for proposals for sessions and individual presentations is 23:59 UTC on Monday 15 May 2023.  The deadline for posters is 23:59 UTC on Wednesday 31 May 2023.

  • Half in-person, half hybrid - ask Simon for preference?

    • In-person can be easier

    • Hybrid has more reach and would produce new recording

    • ACTION: Laura to ask Simon re whether hybrid or in person, and whether optional or chosen by selection committee.

  • Possible topics

    • WorldFAIR, DDI?

    • DDI-CDI/CDIF (import of structural data to FAIR)

    • General DDI, if hybrid

  • Who presents?

    • Laura will be there

    • Adrian and Jennifer will likely not be in person

    • Recruit people to present on panel?

    • Representatives from Romania going?

Statistics Spain training (David Salgado)

  • Taking place 25 May at 16.00-18.00 CEST

  • Zoom booked (via CODATA - thanks Laura!)

  • Topic: General overview, intro to Codebook

  • Trainer(s) - need confirmation

    • Flavio (willing if free) - Lifecycle

    • Katja Moilanen (katja.moilanen@tuni.fi) - Codebook

    • Adrian (confirmed)  - Nesstar? Show-and-tell tools demo

    • Alts:

      • Alina (or colleague)?

      • Arofan

  • Additional questions from Laura:

    • I can start the call for you if required and then hand over the host role once the call is underway, or I can give one of you the login details for the call.  Please let me know which you prefer.

      • AG: LM to start.

    • Do you want participants to register for the workshop so you know beforehand who will be attending?  Or do you just want a link for people to use to join on the day?  If you let me know, I can arrange.

      • Registration needed. Cut registration day before event, LM to send list to AG day before event.

  • ACTION: Arofan to run date by David (cc Jared, Jennifer, Alina); ask about registration, how to disseminate/control

Hackathon and incorporating/encouraging tool development

  • Hackathon successful; biannual meetings planned

  • Demands of open-source

  • Needs of communities

Webinar review process update

  • Update : Arofan still working on it

CODATA-RDA Schools of Research Data Science

  • Update from Laura:

    • 1. Would they be interested in principle in a DDI training component?

      • In principle, this would be a possibility in the context of the data stewards strand of the Schools.  (There’s a ‘data science’ strand and a ‘data stewards’ strand.)  We could take this forward by attending the public workshop on 22 May, 14-15 UTC, where they are reviewing the data stewardship curriculum and suggesting DDI materials where we think there would be a good fit. My contact at the Schools specifically encourages us to do so.

        • Attend meeting, and suggest where DDI might fit, maybe add-on workshop training?

        • ACTION: Jennifer to attend

      • Workshop sign up is here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScH1-lnePEnoSoglnLf4GzQs6OreNfwDO_axr5uiAM5tcV_Tw/viewform - this is the same link I put in the meeting notes.

    • 2. Are they continuing to do any Schools training online or is it all back to being in person?

      • "The Data Steward training in particular is likely to be mostly online. All that said, the experiential quality of face to face is much better. People are much more willing to buy into the vision if they’ve seen it done in front of them with peers. So we’ll always do face to face teaching as well.”

    • 2b. If the latter how do they fund instructor travel?

      • "Right now we just shake the can and find support as we can. We try and ensure that some of the instructors and the helpers are local to keep costs down.”

Develop list of new conferences to become involved in

Last version must be sent to Mari and Jon before the meeting!

Program and contributors

Now is the right time to recruit presenters, Arofan has already started it (vendors first, trainers etc. later), Adrian also volunteered ← Hilde, add him to the EDDI workshops organizers’ list!

 DDI-CDI Webinar 2021

Announcement

CODATA tweet, announcements sent to several mail lists (CODATA-international list, research-dataman, data-science-training), also previous participants of last webinars. If anyone has any further ideas where to announce, then make yourselves heard!

Laura will promote it on DDI users list & DDI Training WG (+Libby?)

Hilde will send it to Mari

Arofan - srg-list

Slide deck review process

← add slides for oceanography

Training Opps Google Drive upgrade

  1. Current agreement - official webinar series will go HERE, and everything else (regardless of the format - virtual or physical) goes HERE

  2. Marta will clean up our Drive folder (DONE!)

 Food for thought:

we should start working more with promoting/training on DDI, involve people familiar with other standards etc.

one idea: discuss it at a separate meeting for planning our activities for the next year (we should have a separate meeting for that where we make up a draft of our plans and present it to the larger group afterwards → have a follow-up meeting after getting feedback from them)
