Methodology Working Group
Notes from Thursday, October 23rd: Are we really talking "methodology"? Is it actually the design / process / result Intended vs. achieved distinction thinking you do ahead of time and the thing that you do and the combined result is the methodology So in the weighting model (slide) "methodology" should be "design" and the whole thing is Methodology Change "weight" to "X" Questionnaire Sampling - proposed as a design model Weighting Editing - rules established at design stage and are adjusted during the process Coding Imputing Estimating (modeling, point estimates of the population, analysis) as an aspect of weighting - estimating population parameters model creation (CPI - modeling market baskets and dealing with substitution) infering reality vs. measuring reality Analysis plan (analytics) Adjustments Frame construction and management Selection of frame Adjust for bias in the frame Many of these are processing but there is a design principal around them Distinction between design and implementation ********** Design Implementation is the realization of the design ********** [Captured as a set of images in Toronto] Process of conducting research and the study inception discussion Study/Survey development FROM IMAGE States:Views Study inception --> ethics review (why) Methodogoy (design) --> survey development (what) Data collection and processing --> fieldwork management (what) Analysis Dissemination Discovery -Evaluation- -ARchving- Information Views: Process Classification Data description Instrumentent codebook Datamanagementment Other: Qualitative Collection management
